Stan Wawrinka did not stay in Belgrade for long, he was defeated by Laslo Djere, but it is always good to have a three-time Grand Slam champion in the tournament.
The Swiss served well, he fought as much as he could, but he simply had no solution against the inspired Djere.
“Extremely difficult match against Djere. I tried to find better in-game options to counter him, but failed. He was better than me and won. I enjoyed these few days in Belgrade, but unfortunately, I was defeated at the end of the season”, said Stan Wawrinka after the match.
The Swiss then referred to Djere’s statement that he has no intention of playing tennis until the age of 39, and logically – the question arose as to when he will retire.
“I still enjoy tennis. It was the same in Belgrade. I had some good matches before coming here. True, it was a difficult day because I lost, but in general I love my job, I love playing, it’s my passion. I enjoy tennis. I’m trying to push forward, even though the season didn’t end the way I wanted. I don’t know exactly when I will retire, I will try to prepare as well as possible for the next year. I hope to play good tennis.”
Novak Djokovic was present at the start of the tournament in the Belgrade Arena, he watched some matches, but he skipped today’s.
“We met, but not today. We talked a little. The Olympics were fantastic for him, he won a gold medal. Mostly, we talked about the season that just ended for both of us”, Wawrinka concluded.
