Without any major problems, Laslo Djere defeated Stan Wawrinka 6:3, 6:3 and confirmed his good form at the end of the season.
The Serbian will play a new match tomorrow against Duje Ajdukovic, the “lucky winner” after the withdrawal of Alex de Minor.
“Wawrinka has had a great career, he’s a great player. To be honest, he is no longer what he used to be. But you still have to beat him, he has a great serve. If I had given him a chance, he would certainly have attacked me. You have to play at a high level against him. I’m satisfied with today’s match”, said Djere.
Djere did a great job of returning Wawrinka’s serves, and many commented on his game against him that it was like from the best days of Pete Sampras.
“I know Wawrinka has a good serve, I was ready for it, but I also served well above my average. Last year I also did well and it helped me in large part to have a successful year. My serve wasn’t at that level this year, but it was today.
The next rival is Duje Ajduković from Croatia, whom Djere does not know well.
“We never played, we didn’t even work out together. To me, the season is what it is. Right now I’m at a stage where I have to take every match as seriously as possible. I’ve fallen in the ATP rankings, I’ve struggled with injuries, I’m lacking a bit of self-confidence. When you are in shape you can give your 80 percent, and this year I’ve been playing up and down. “I’m going to do my best to play like today again.”
He believes that if he wins tomorrow’s match, his confidence can grow.
“Only since the US Open, counting the match against Struff and two sets with Nole, I was at my level. And then there was the injury against Novak. Then I had some challengers who weren’t quite up to the mark. After that I played well in Stockholm, but another setback followed. I haven’t been able to play two good matches in a row. If I could my repeat performance tomorrow, it would really mean a lot to me”, Djere explained.
