After a real drama in the Belgrade Arena, Hamad Medjedovic defeated US tennis man Brandon Nakashima by 2: 1, in sets 3: 6, 7: 5, 6: 3.
Carried by the support of the best tennis player in the history, Novak Djokovic, the young Serbian played a perfect second set, when he sealed the deal.
Medjedovic raised the fans to their feet with a great match and announced even better tennis during the Belgrade Open tournament.
“A tough match. My rival played very well in the first set, but then he gave up on his serve. In the second set where I had a break ball, I started to take over the match again. He played at a high level the entire time and was hitting all the right angles. I’ve had a lot of trouble getting used to it, it’s been hard for me to get used to it. When his serve weakened, I started to take over the match,” said Hamad Medjedovic.
The young Serbian did not hide the fact that the surface of the court in the Arena suits him just fine.
“Honestly, it suits me how the ball bounces. It’s fast, so it suits my game.”
He hasn’t been at his current level in the last six months, as he himself has confirmed.
“Honestly, I’ve struggled this year. There were failures in some tournaments. The whole year has been up and down, I’ve tried, I’ve trained well, but it’s only now that I’ve started playing. And in November last year, it was like that. There’s something about this month. I’ve found my game, we’ll see how much I can do.”
Hamad was especially impressive in the third set. In the sixth game, he used a break point and reached 4: 2, and in the next he cemented his 5: 2 lead. Nakashima took the next game, but Medjedovic played well on his serve and won the third set with 6: 3.
“It’s always good to play in front of your home fans. A lot of people came from New York, including my family. Even though it’s the last tournament of the year, I’ve found motivation and I’m feeling great about the tournament. I hope that I will play at my maximum until the end”, concluded Medjedovic.
