In less than an hour, Denis Shapovalov defeated Jirzi Lehecka 2:0 (6:2, 6:1) and qualified for the Belgrade Open final.
The Canadian did not spare the young Czech who turned 23 today.
“I definitely did not expect this level of play because it is already the end of the season, it is the last tournament of the year. I fought every match. I am very happy to have reached the finals of this tournament. Like I said, I didn’t expect to be this good. A good week for me, progress is visible,” Denis Shapovalov said.
In the final, the Canadian will play against one of the Serbian players.
“Whoever it is, Medjedovic or Djere, I expect a tough match. One is experienced, the other is young but a good player. I know that the crowd will be with the home player, but I hope that I will also have support tomorrow”.
Shapovalov also referred to the organization of the tournament proper and the transition from the qualifiers to the finals.
“The whole week is fantastic for me. I don’t know what to say except that the organization is excellent. It went really well for me starting with the qualifiers, I had the French guy there, and in the first round I had Fucovic, who is not an easy rival. However, progress was visible,” explained Shapovalov.
